Tragic News from the Ontario Outlaws Baseball Program
(an email from Paul Reece, GM Ontario Outlaws)
It is with my deepest sorrow that I inform you on behalf of the Ontario Outlaws that one of our family of players, Eric Goegan, age 17 of Guelph has died as a result of injuries sustained in a single motor vehicle accident which occurred in Guelph on Friday night December 21st 2013 at approx 7pm. Eric, was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle and was on his way from home to pick up some friends to attend the movies. The accident occurred when he lost control of the vehicle upon encountering an icy section of the Hanlon Creek Blvd., and struck a Pole. Eric was transported to Hamilton Hospital following the accident. At approx 1:15pm yesterday I received a phone call from his mother(Consuelo) who informed me of the accident and that Eric had been declared clinically dead. My understanding is that he did not suffer during the accident as he has sustained an immediate and irreparable brain injury which rendered him unconscious. In a wonderful selfless act of kindness, Eric's family consented to his being kept on life support until approx 11pm last night for the purpose of donating some of his organs , and by so doing the gift of life will be further enjoyed by three needing recipients. I respectfully request that you keep Eric and his family (John and Consuelo - parents) and Amanda(sister) in your prayers during this devastating time of bereavement. Eric was a wonderful young man and a treasure to have on our team. I loved him dearly. He loved playing in our league, and whether it be as a lefty on the hill, or at first base we could always rely on him to give it his all as he exemplified what it meant to be a "team player". It comes as no surprise that even at death's door he still put others ahead of himself.
I will keep you informed of any information concerning funeral arrangements when I become aware of it. My understanding at this point that no service will take place until after Christmas. While it is very hard for me to wish each of you a Merry Christmas, nonetheless, I do and I hope that you can find the time to enjoy it with your families. Please be safe. God Bless, folks.
The Burlington Double Blues Baseball Program would like to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Goegan Family, and the Ontario Outlaws Program. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
